Rooted in Korean Taekwon-Do, wheelchair martial arts is a brand-new fitness art created for wheelchair users and persons with physical disabilities — and able-bodied practitioners are equally welcome. For 22 years since our founding in 2004, we have promoted sport without barriers through friendship in martial arts.
The China Hong Kong PHAB Martial Art Association (formerly the Hong Kong Wheelchair Martial Arts Association) was founded in 2004 — now in our 22nd year — and is a registered society dedicated to promoting sport without barriers. Wheelchair martial arts is a brand-new fitness art based on Korean Taekwon-Do, designed for wheelchair users and persons with physical disabilities, and open to able-bodied participants as well. We actively promote the inclusion of persons with and without disabilities in our communities — deepening public understanding of persons with disabilities and working towards our mission of equal opportunities.
A journey of inclusion, 22 years in the making.
Wheelchair martial arts began when our founder, Master Anthony Li, attended a religious gathering in Korea many years ago. Watching several sisters devote themselves to translating hymns into sign language for deaf friends — expressing complex lyrics with their hands — he was deeply moved. That moment inspired him to use his own expertise to design and develop wheelchair martial arts for people of all abilities.
Beyond lectures, demonstrations, experience days, beginner and long-term training classes, we bring wheelchair martial arts deep into the community — visiting corporations, primary and secondary schools, kindergartens, special schools, elderly centres, churches and rehabilitation organisations. We also partner with community groups — for example, running wheelchair martial arts classes at the PHAB Centres under the Hong Kong PHAB Association.
